Argyle and Yarmouth Receive Funding for Contaminated Soil Treatment Facility
Brooklyn, February 20,2009 -

The municipalities of Yarmouth and Argyle and the Town of Yarmouth will soon be able to treat contaminated soil for reuse.

Federal, provincial and municipal funding of $546,000 was announced today for the construction of a contaminated soil treatment facility at the regional solid waste park in South Ohio.

The funding, which is being provided through the Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund, was announced today by the Honourable Richard Hurlburt, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations and MP Greg Kerr, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Veterans Affairs.

"This investment is an important part of the province's effort to help communities and the economy," said Mr. Hurlburt. "Today's project is one of many investments to come that will improve our infrastructure, stimulate our economy and, most importantly, create jobs. It is one of the largest infrastructure programs in the history of our province."

“Through projects such as this, the Government of Canada is demonstrating its commitment to building strong, vibrant competitive communities while ensuring a clean environment,” said MP Kerr.

Under the Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund, the federal, provincial and municipal governments anticipate investing upwards of $111 million in infrastructure projects in smaller, communities across Nova Scotia, between now and 2014.

“Today’s investment enables communities to move forward with important infrastructure projects,” said Lloyd Hines, president of the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities. “We will continue to work with our federal and provincial partners to find long term solutions to our infrastructure needs."
