Nova Scotia municipalities are now able to apply for a share of $32 million in funding for environmental, economic or community infrastructure projects under the communities component of the Building Canada Fund.

The second round call for proposals under the fund was announced today, March 13, by Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, and Carolyn Bolivar-Getson, Minister of Natural Resources on behalf of Richard Hurlburt, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations.

The call for proposals comes after the province announced its $1.9 billion infrastructure program, Building for Growth.

"Today's announcement is another important step that is helping communities in Nova Scotia," said Mr. MacKay. "Canada and Nova Scotia are committed to creating jobs, boosting regional economies, supporting local infrastructure, and building stronger communities."

"Today's investment in municipal infrastructure is part of the Building for Growth plan that will not only improve the quality of life for many, but will also create jobs," said Ms. Bolivar-Getson. "The plan will improve infrastructure in our communities, as well as stimulate our economy and keep people working."

On-line applications are now available at http://www.nsinfrastructure.ca/pages/Application-Forms.aspx. The deadline for the second round of applications is April 16. Eligible categories for this round include water, wastewater, solid waste infrastructure, local roads, green energy, disaster mitigation, culture, tourism, sport and collaborative projects. Projects will be selected through a competitive process. 

Under the Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund, the federal, provincial and municipal governments anticipate investing upwards of $111 million in infrastructure projects in smaller, communities across Nova Scotia, between now and 2014.
