The Province of Nova Scotia administers the distribution of the federal gas tax funds to municipalities. The distribution is based on a formula proposed by the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities (UNSM).
The distribution formula is based on:
- population
- the number of dwellings in a municipality
- municipal expenditure
A municipality must enter into an agreement with the province (Municipal Funding Agreement) and submit a five-year Capital Investment Plan with eligible projects and meet reporting requirements before funds are released.
